“Excellence is a result
of caring more than others think is wise, risking more than others think is
safe, dreaming more than others think is practical, and expecting more than others
think is possible.”

The
objective of this class is to give students experience in ballroom dance
through performance and competition. You
will learn routines from all four forms of ballroom: International Standard,
International Latin, American Smooth, and American Rhythm. Dancers may not
participate on other dance teams while on the Ballroom team.
ELIGIBILITY FOR BEING ON COMPANY
Students
must maintain a 3.0 GPA, with only 1 failing grade throughout the year. If your GPA drops below a 3.0 during the
term, you will be placed on probation until the grade is brought up. During the
probation period, you will be required to attend rehearsals, but will not be
allowed to dance. Alternates will be placed in your spot, and if Kayti deems
appropriate, you may be removed from that spot permanently. If your GPA drops lower than 3.0 at the end
of first or third term, you will be benched for the second or fourth term. If your GPA drops lower than 3.0 at the end
of second term, you will be removed from the team for the rest of the
year.
GRADING SCALE:
A= 100% - 94%; A-= 93% - 90%; B+= 89% - 87%; B= 86% - 84%;
B-= 83% - 80%; etc.
Students will be graded on
the following:
IN CLASS PARTICIPATION- 10 points each day
Each day,
points will be assessed for being on time to class, being prepared (e.g.
wearing appropriate clothing), and displaying proper conduct.
¨
If you are absent, you are responsible for
knowing the material taught, and knowing when you are expected to be at
rehearsal next.
¨
My general attendance policy is that you are
responsible for making up the material missed in class. If however absences
become a problem we will revert to the LPHS attendance policy. All tardies and absences will then need to be
made up at tardy/ absence school.
Hopefully this will not be an issue.
¨
Each day, students are expected to dress
appropriately for class. This is a
movement class, therefore, I expect that you wear clothing that allows for
this. NO JEANS WILL BE ALLOWED IN
CLASS! Men may wear latin pants, or some
other pant that allows for movement.
Ladies may wear dance/warm-up pants, or knee-length skirts with
trunks/tights underneath. Shirts must
have sleeves for both men and women (NO TANK TOPS), and must cover the
midriff. If you are not dressed
appropriately, you will lose participation points. Five minutes will be given at the beginning
of each class to change. Once the changing bell has rung I will dismiss you to
change.
¨
Ladies must tie hair back so that it does not
distract from the rehearsal
¨
Dancers must wear appropriate ballroom dance
shoes. Tennis shoes, sandals, boots, flip flops, and socks do not count as
ballroom shoes. Correct ballroom shoes
can be purchased from Glass Slipper (AF), Dance Works (Provo), or Red Tango
(Provo) or online. If needed I can
direct you to good websites. Star Dance
Shop has come to BYU annually and given us a discount.
¨
If you are not going to be in class for any
reason, dancers must let Kayti, David or the team captains know before the
start of rehearsal that day.
¨
Every team member needs to learn every routine,
including medleys. This way, if anything
happens, Kayti or David can call on any person on the team to fill in.
¨
Points will be deducted for not abiding by these
rules.
INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE – 10 points each
week
Each student is required to practice outside
of class for an hour a week. This practice must be with a partner. Practice
time is to be used to work on technique, learning team routines, learning
syllabus routines, practicing with a partner for competitions.
WEEKLY JOURNAL – 10 points each
week
Each student will email their journal entries
on Monday of each week. If you email your entry after Monday you will receive
partial credit. In your journal entry you will record the following:
- How many
hours you practiced outside of class
- What you did
in that practice time. You will need to give a detailed breakdown. For
example: 20 minutes working on Samba technique (Name the figures you
worked on), 20 minutes working with my partner for the Orem competition
Quickstep.
- How you felt
class went this week. What did you learn? Who did you get to know better?
What problems are you having? Are there any issues that Kayti needs to
know about?
It is YOUR responsibility to get your journal
turned in. This is a set, weekly assignment.
To help you in watching good dancing, here are
some couples or people to watch and learn from on YouTube or other video sites.
My spelling may be off, so I will try to update this as we go along:
Standard: Mirko Gozzoli and Alessia Betti,
Marcus and Karen Hilton, William Pino and Allesandra Buchiarelli, Massimo
Giorgiano and partner, Jonathan Wilkins, Katusha Demidova, Arunus Bizokas, Christopher
Hawkins, Hazel Newberry, Timothy Howsen and Joanne Bolton, Tony Dokman, Andrew
Sinkinson, Charlotte Yorgenson, Jens Werner, Luca Barrichi, Fabio Selma and
Simone, Victor Fung, Anna Mikhed, Igor and Irina Suvarov, John Wood and Anne
Lewis, Nick Cotton, Pierre Allair and Mireille Viellieux, and many more. Any
World championship semifinal or final, and any British Open semifinal or final
are also excellent. Dancing With the Stars material is only worthwhile
if it is the professionals dancing together, not with the “stars.”
Latin: Ricardo Cocchi, Louis Van Amstel, Bryan
Watson and Carmen, Claudia Leoni, Karen Hardy, Hans Galke, Franko Formica, Andres
Skufka, Karina Smirnoff, Eugene Katsevman and Maria Manusova, Donnie Burns and
Gaynor Fairweather, Ralph Lewiener, Lydia Weiser, Johan and Nadia Eftedal,
Matej Kracek, Peter Stokkebroe, Michael Malitowski and Joanna Leunis, Andrei
Gavriline, Gary and Diana McDonald, Slavik Kryklvy, Sammy Stopford and Barbara
McColl, Corky and Shirley Ballas, and many more. Any World championship semifinal or final, and
any British Open semifinal or final are also excellent. Dancing With the
Stars material is only worthwhile if it is the professionals dancing
together, not with the “stars.”
OUT OF CLASS REHEARSALS- 10 points each week
Rehearsals will be determined by what we can schedule with
the school. No-one is excused from rehearsal. There will always be random
things that keep you from the occasional rehearsal. Parents, please help make
sure your children can come to these rehearsals. You will lose points for
missing rehearsal. I will not re-teach material covered in rehearsals. Get with
someone on team and catch up the material if you do happen to miss a rehearsal.
¨
Every member of the team is expected to be at
every rehearsal unless otherwise specified.
PERFORMANCES- 100 points/ performance
You will be expected to perform at concert in
May, as well as smaller performances throughout the year. Each concert will have a technical rehearsal
and a dress rehearsal that are required.
During the
year, performance opportunities arise. We welcome these and hope that you will
be flexible in taking the opportunity to perform. I will give you as much
notice as I can.
Each female member of the company needs to own their own:
¨
Nude leotard to be worn under all costumes
¨
Bra cups to be sewn into leotard
¨
Good condition Caramel colored fishnets
¨
Ballroom Shoes
¨
Own hair accessories (hair-nets, bobby-pins,
gel, hairspray, etc.)
¨
Own make up for performances
Each male member of the company needs to own their own:
¨
Black latin pants
¨
Black biker shorts to be worn under all costumes
¨
Black socks
¨
Ballroom Shoes
¨
Appropriate hair cut for all performances. Kayti
determines what is appropriate.
INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION- 50 points/ competition
Each dancer
is required to compete in one competition in the fall, and two competitions in
the spring (one competition must be the Alpine Classic in February). Extra
credit will be given for competing at more than the required competition.
¨
Students must find and choose a partner
themselves. Kayti is NOT responsible for
putting partnerships together.
¨
Entry forms will be given out by Kayti, with due
dates clearly marked. All entry forms
must be turned in by that date for Kayti to send it in. After that date, it is your responsibility to
send in the form, and late fees may be assessed.
¨
Entry fees (i.e. the money to be submitted with
entry forms) will be paid for from the club account; they are covered in the
fees you pay at the beginning of the year. Admission fees (i.e. paying to get
in the door) and transportation are the responsibility of the dancer unless the
team is competing at the event in which case the team will pay for admission
fees.
¨
If the team is competing a routine or in a
team-match category at any competition, admission fees and entry fees will
already be paid for, so it is expected that students will be dancing
individually.
¨
Some competitive couples take private
instruction to get routines and more intensive technical training. This is not required, but there is value in
doing so.
¨
If couples are dancing in an open event at a BYU
competition, you are required to be registered with the NDCA (National Dance
Council of America). This must be done before the competition, or they will not
allow you to compete. ($20)
¨
When attending any competition, students must be
dressed appropriately. Whether you are
competing or just watching, no jeans should be worn to any competition. Men should wear dress pants, button down
shirt, and a tie. Ladies need to wear a
dress, skirt with nice top. Warm-ups do
not constitute appropriate dress. (Kayti
attends most of the competitions in the area. Don’t push your luck!) If you are seen at any competition
inappropriately dressed, you will lose 10 points.
¨
If you are seen general dancing at a
competition, you may receive extra credit.
¨
Juniors: 12-15 years of age; Youth: 16-18 years
of age; Adult: 19 & up
¨
Newcomer: Beginner; Syllabus: Intermediate;
Open: Advanced (costume)
CONCERT CRITIQUE- 50 points
Students will receive extra credit
if they attend a ballroom dance concert (NOT COMPETITION) during the year.
¨
This can be from any performing ballroom
dance company. Many high schools and
universities put on concerts each semester.
¨
Students
must write a two-page, double-spaced critique of the concert, and turn it in
one week after the performance, with a program or ticket stub attached.
TEAM COMPETITION
A medley is a routine that has each
of the five dances of its section, put into one 5-and-a-half minute long
routine.
¨
This routine then competes against other
formation teams.
¨
We will be learning a new Standard Medley. We
will be keeping our current Latin Medley.
We will also be competing in the
Team Match section of a number of competitions.
¨
In Team Match six couples from each school dance
individually in one dance each.
¨
The scores from each dance are combined to get
an overall winner.
The team will be involved in one
competition a month.
¨
We will compete a different routine at each
competition.
¨
In the new calendar year, only the medleys and
team-match will be competed.
October- Westlake High School (No
team, but compete individually)
October - Timpview High School (Team)
November- Hillcrest
High School (No Team
Competition, but compete individually)
November - BYU Festival (No team competition, but
compete individually)
February- Center Stage @ Thanksgiving Point
February - UVU (medleys)
February - Timpanoogas
March- Nationals
@ BYU (Both Medleys
& Team Match)
Note:
Dates are subject to change
-We welcome other performance opportunities; let me know if
you have any.
MEDLEYS:
¨
Kayti and David will determine who will compete
the medleys at which competitions. Their decision is final. Recognizing that
there are 8 couples in a medley, not everyone will get to compete at nationals.
Everyone will, however, have a chance to compete a team number at some point in
the year.
¨
The medleys are for a National
Championship. I expect rehearsals to be
a priority.
¨
Dress for medley rehearsals is black &
white. This means that men must wear
black latin pants with either a plain white shirt (Latin), or a button up white
shirt with black tie (Standard). Ladies
must wear either a black skirt or plain black pants with a white shirt. (No Exceptions!)

¨
Points will be deducted if disrespect is shown
EACH OTHER

Dancers will not argue, cut-down, or demean each

problem concerning rehearsals, performances, or competitions.
¨
The things you do outside of team and during

grounds for dismissal from the company

be cause for dismissal from the ballroom company
Team Captains
The Student officers will be appointed by Kayti and will
consist of:
- Captains:
responsible for assisting Kayti with decisions regarding the company; also
warming up before rehearsals, running rehearsals, etc. Team captains will
also be responsible for a monthly social. If you have ideas for socials,
let them know. Working with Kayti, the captains will set dates and
activities.
PARENT COMMITTEE AND BOOSTERS
- President:
responsible for helping Kayti and David with everything other than team
practices and choreography
- Food
Committee Advisor: responsible for planning meals for dress rehearsals,
during nationals, and spring concert.
- Concert
Advisor: responsible for organizing ‘backstage’ for concerts (ticket sellers,
etc).
Each parent with a child on company
is expected to participate on the parent committees, as well as helping at the
Alpine Classic Competition. If you, as a
parent, are not willing to participate, this company cannot function. Each parent is expected be on one of those
committees. If everyone participates, it
should just be a once a year commitment, aside from the Alpine Classic
Competition. As much as your child is on
the team, so are you!
*Activity Committee: chaperone activities including socials,
performances, and trips.
*Meal Committee: help to prepare food for meals, and set it
up. (Team covers costs)
*Concert Committee: ticket takers, ushers, etc.
*ALL PARENTS will be needed at some point to chaperone at
nationals or on the trip. Hopefully something will fit into your schedule.
Tour
We will be going on tour during the second half of the
school year. We go to receive
professional training and to have opportunities to perform. This helps build our resume and give the
students experience outside of Utah. Our
tour is typically done in April and costs roughly $400 per student. We do our
best to keep the cost down so that every student can participate.
FEE BREAKDOWN
$50 Participation fee
$250 Competition Fee
